    - Some 30 tons of Sri Lankan coins stuck in India

Pilgrims and devotees as a habit mostly offer coins to temples and places of worship. This results in a shortage of coins in the monetary circulation. Sri Lanka Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has proposed a novel solution to this issue.

While speaking to journalists, the Central Bank Governor said that the country’s religious places of worship should prepare to accept electronic cash from the pilgrims and devotees.

Towards this, automated teller machines (ATMs) now popular within society should be installed within religious places of worship, pointed out the Governor.

Ajith Nivard Cabraal further added that the Central Bank has launched a project to collect the largely accumulated coins at places of worship and exchange them with currency notes.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing to bring back some 30 tons of Sri Lankan coins offered to temples in India by Sri Lankans on pilgrimages to these places of worship, said the Central Bank Governor.
